Water is without doubt the most valuable of all natural resources; indeed, it forms the very basis of life on Earth. All plant and animal life relies on water, which is also the largest constituent of most living organisms, making up about 60% of the human body and 80-90% of the body mass of most aquatic organisms.
Aquatic ecosystems comprise of a diverse assemblage of organisms whose interactions between each other, and the environment cause a series of complex physio-chemical reactions, many of which have strong influences on fish and invertebrate culture. Water properties and environmental parameters often affect the choice for an aquaculture site and the cultured species. It is important that the aquaculturist have an understanding of water ecology and possess the skills necessary to provide a suitable environment for the venture to be successful.
In this course learners will get a brief overview of the physical, chemical and biological water quality variables.
